Located in Bangli regency, about 45 km from Denpasar, Desa Adat (Indigenous Villages) Penglipuran have been around 700 years ago, at the time of the kingdom of Bangli. Residents from the area in Kintamani Bayung Gede moved to place this village are now. The name itself comes from the word Penglipuran Pengeling Pura which means a shrine to remember the ancestors. All the physical development of the village and its cultural development are still referring to the ancestral land that still exists in Bayung. Even for certain traditional ceremonies still have to beg his blessing to the land of ancestors.

The village is embraced by the concept of spatial trimandala, divided into three different spaces in the function and level of purity, namely primary, intermediate and contemptible. The third location of this space stretching from the north (the mountains) to the south (ocean), with country walks straight staircase as a central axis, separating the intermediate space into two parts. At the far north on the main zone or “space on the gods”, where the building named Upgrading holy temple where the villagers worship. The intermediate zone, or “man space” there are 76 lots and a house garden shelter residents divided into two levels, namely 38 west and 38 east. Each plot has a size of 800-900 square meters stretching from west to east. Village roads as the separator is maintained free of four-wheeled vehicles and do not use asphalt paving blocks and stones but brush. The southernmost section is contemptible mandala or “space for people who have died” in the form of burial places of the villagers.
Houses of every family in every plot were almost uniform all, are in the yard and bounded by walls and having a traditional Balinese gate as the entrance. Each compound has several buildings in the form of sleeping room, living room, kitchen, halls, barns and place of worship in the house. Between one yard to another yard there is a narrow road that connects the two. Building of traditional architecture with a pile of wood materials and roof shingles are typically in the form of bamboo.

The use of bamboo, which is quite dominant, it is not surprising because 40% of its territory is vast bamboo forests. Materials for the building can be taken from these forests, as well as for material goods and the need to craft a ritual. From the ecological side, the bamboo forest to withstand erosion of vital functions considering the condition of village land is sloping.

Spatial planning and the ability to maintain traditional buildings in the village Penglipuran, became a special attraction of this place so that eventually developed into a tourist village. Persistence of the population to fight for the authenticity of the village also deserve appreciation, not surprisingly, the village was awarded the Kalpataru Penglipuran.
